A new Australia will be built on a new level of understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Here are some of our tips on how to show respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders both in public and in private.
- Open every public meeting and event by acknowledging the traditional owners. Use their name.
- Always invite any traditional owners present to do the welcome to country. If someone is not a traditional owner (TO) they can do the acknowledgement
- Use the term Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rather than the term Indigenous
- Ask permission before you call someone Aunty or Uncle
- Sit beside Elders not directly across from them
- Become an ANTaR member and support the vital work that ANTaR does in Qld
- Enroll in the ANTaR Qld Learning More Program and begin your journey of understanding
- Subscribe to the What’s On e-newsletter and stay in the loop
- Become a volunteer helping at stalls, events and workshops
- Join a working group and become an active campaigner on issues
- Do all of the above
