The Call to Action demands that the Queensland Government keep its promise to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People of Queensland to reduce the imprisonment rates in Qld to rates proportional against population ie: rates should sit at around 3.5% of the prison population as opposed to 25% and above.Promises made in the 2001 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Agreement failed due to the lack of resourcing, measurables, action plans, key performance indicators, research and ongoing commitment.
Join us in calling on the Government to implement coordinated, targeted and well-resourced action involving:
• collaborative support from the Queensland and Commonwealth parliaments, aligned with community support
• leadership from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in deciding, managing and sustaining solutions that work for their particular situations
• substantively resourced programs and services to support 'at risk' individuals, strengthen families and communities and reduce offending
• changes to discriminatory and unjust laws and practices, and cultural changes in the public service to support these changes
• urgent and sustained inputs at five points of influence ie: at risk groups, police contact, sentencing and remand, rehabilitation and post release support
