ANTaR Qld made a Submission to the 2010 Review of Police Powers and Responsibilities emphasising the need for the Qld Police Service to take account of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rates in Qld, the third worst in the country, and to employ diversionary and cautionary options whereever possible.
ANTaR Qld and the Project 10% co-chair Ken Georgetown met with the Attorney General, Cameron Dick, to discuss the goals of Project 10% - reducing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Imprisonment Rates in Qld by 10% a year for 10 years. The discussion included practical measures required to address these issues and accountabiulities under the National Framework on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice. Members of the Project 10% lobbying group met with the Qld Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek and the Shadow Attorney General Lawrence Springborg in April, to discuss the failure of the government to keep to the 2001 Justice Agreement promises. There was a committment by both parties to keep the government accountable and to find a way forward to reduce the devastating imprisonment rates in Qld. In March ANTaR Qld made a submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee inquiry into the Wild Rivers Bill in relation to the Principal of Consent as set out by the International Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
THE only successful compensation case brought by a member of the Stolen Generations has been upheld by South Australia's highest court, sparking renewed calls for schemes to compensate Aboriginal people taken from their families as children.
It is unclear whether the South Australian government will appeal the decision to the High Court or settle other compensation claims by members of the Stolen Generations, because it remains in caretaker mode following Saturday's state election.
This week we have seen certain members of parliament claim that acknowledging traditional land owners is tokenistic.

ANTaR Qld and other advocacy groups working to reactivate the issue of the over representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders in the criminal justice system, were acknowledged in the Qld Parliament by Minister Desley Boyle as the Qld Government announced the development of a 2010 action plan to address the issue immediately.
