SUMMARY:Common Grace is running a prayer vigil
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us in prayer on Wednesday 15 April 2026\, the anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.\nThis year marks 35 years since the Commission delivered its final report. Heartbreakingly\, in the decades since this 1991 report was released\, 626 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died in custody. \nWe grieve the lack of implementation of the 339 recommendations by the Australian Government and as this injustice continues\, so does the deep and ongoing grief experienced by First Nations families and communities. \nAs followers of Jesus\, we are called not to turn away\, but to draw near – in lament\, in prayer\, and in action. \nWe long to see a justice system that truly reflects justice.\nA society where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are supported\, valued and empowered.\nWhere structural racism is a thing of the past.\nWhere communities are safe\, free and flourishing.\nWhere children as young as 10 are met with love and care instead of incarceration. \nOn Wednesday 15 April 2026\, we will come humbly before God together.\nWe’ll listen deeply to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian leaders\, lament\, read the Bible\, pray and act together. \nWe would love you to join us.\nDate: Wednesday 15 April 2026 \nTime: 7:30pm – 8:45pm AEST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nSign up to receive the Zoom link and details for our time together as we gather in prayer\, solidarity and hope. \nSign Up Here \nSee Resources on Common Grace web site

SUMMARY:Invasion Day 2026 - We Have Survived! Sunshine Coast
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to stand in solidarity & goodwill with First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) peoples on this day to mark Invasion Day\, a Day of Mourning and Survival. \nJoin us! 88 years since the first Day of Mourning\, community will come together\, to acknowledge and pay respects to those who have marched before. \nInvasion Day is a day of inclusion\, bringing together all genders\, all ages\, all backgrounds\, and in a way that acknowledges the injustice that 26 January represents. It signifies the continued struggle First Nations peoples and indeed the broader Australian community endure. It honours those giants that walked this path before and have done since 1938. It’s on the shoulders of these giants that we stand today. \nThis year is the Sunshine Coast’s 4th Invasion Day procession. Come and be part of history. We know there are over 1.2 million First Nations allies in Queensland and this is your call to action! \nRSVP and more info \nOn Monday\, 26 January 2026 \nAssemble 9.00am at Foundation Square (Sunshine Coast City Hall) Maroochydore.\n\nBring your family\, bring your friends and bring your neighbours to commemorate the true history of this country.\n\nAt 10.00am community will lead a 1.5km procession to Cotton Tree Park where we will gather. There will be speeches and time for community to network.\n\nIf you or your organisation is interested in supporting this event please email info@firstnationsaction.org

SUMMARY:Mabo Day June 3 each year
DESCRIPTION:Mabo Day is commemorated on June 3 each year in the Torres Strait Islands and across Australia. It marks the anniversary of the 1992 High Court decision that recognized Eddie Koiki Mabo’s fight for Indigenous land rights\, overturning the legal doctrine of terra nullius (the idea that Australia was land belonging to no one before European settlement). In the Torres Strait\, where Mabo was born on Mer Island\, the day is celebrated with cultural performances\, community gatherings and reflections on land rights and justice. It’s a powerful day of pride\, remembrance and cultural strength. \nhttps://tsirc.qld.gov.au/news-events/events/

SUMMARY:Aunty Betty Memorial Reconciliation Walk 2025
DESCRIPTION:Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Group warmly invites you to join us for a community celebration to connect with Kabi Kabi First Nation’s cultural heritage through traditional dance\, music and a guided walk with Traditional Custodians. \nAbout the Aunty Betty Memorial Reconciliation Walk \nHundreds turn out for the Aunty Betty Memorial Reconciliation Walk on a beautiful sunny day at Dicky Beach including many of our local schools and politicians. \nThe walk commences with a Welcome to Country\, Kabi Kabi dance and history of Aunty Betty before Traditional Custodians lead a short walk on-Country\, providing information and stories about the area. \nThe morning provides everyone the opportunity to connect with our local First Nations cultural heritage through dance\, music\, and the guided walk with Traditional Custodians. \nIn 2015\, SCRGI held its first Coastal Walk. Aunty Betty saw this as an opportunity to expand the reach of the group and worked over following years to continue obtaining sponsorship and planning of the walk – her legacy to the community. \nFrom 2019 the Walk has been known as the Aunty Betty Memorial Reconciliation Walk where we pay tribute to the life and work of our much loved Patron Aunty Betty McMahon. \nThe National Reconciliation Week theme for 2025\, Bridging Now to Next\, reflects the ongoing connection between past\, present and future. \nMembers of Aunty Betty’s family are always in attendance to celebrate the life of this extraordinary woman and her enormous contribution to services for First Nations peoples on the Sunshine Coast. \nThis event is being held at Dicky Beach Park\, 10.00am Wednesday\, 28 May 2025. \nRSVP here to attend!

SUMMARY:Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum
DESCRIPTION:The 1967 Referendum was a landmark achievement following decades of activism by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous people\, where more than 90 percent of Australians voted in favour of amending two sections of the Australian Constitution. \n56 years ago\, on May 27\, the 1967 Referendum was held to change two sections of the Australian constitution in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In an overwhelming ‘yes’ vote\, 90.77 per cent of Australian voters voted for the changes The referendum came about from the work of many Indigenous activists across the country and over many years. \n\nThere were protests and campaigns calling out the injustices facing Indigenous people.\nNITV looks back at those events and some of the people and organisations that lobbied for First Nations’ rights in the lead up to the 1967 Referendum.\nImage courtesy NITV \n
