SUMMARY:Common Grace is running a prayer vigil
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us in prayer on Wednesday 15 April 2026\, the anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.\nThis year marks 35 years since the Commission delivered its final report. Heartbreakingly\, in the decades since this 1991 report was released\, 626 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died in custody. \nWe grieve the lack of implementation of the 339 recommendations by the Australian Government and as this injustice continues\, so does the deep and ongoing grief experienced by First Nations families and communities. \nAs followers of Jesus\, we are called not to turn away\, but to draw near – in lament\, in prayer\, and in action. \nWe long to see a justice system that truly reflects justice.\nA society where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are supported\, valued and empowered.\nWhere structural racism is a thing of the past.\nWhere communities are safe\, free and flourishing.\nWhere children as young as 10 are met with love and care instead of incarceration. \nOn Wednesday 15 April 2026\, we will come humbly before God together.\nWe’ll listen deeply to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian leaders\, lament\, read the Bible\, pray and act together. \nWe would love you to join us.\nDate: Wednesday 15 April 2026 \nTime: 7:30pm – 8:45pm AEST \nLocation: Online via Zoom \nSign up to receive the Zoom link and details for our time together as we gather in prayer\, solidarity and hope. \nSign Up Here \nSee Resources on Common Grace web site

SUMMARY:Truth-Telling in Wynnum with Valerie Howell
DESCRIPTION:VALERIE HOWELL researched and wrote Jessie\, We Hear You Crying (2024) — part family memoir\, part archival reconstruction. \nHer compelling work starts with an official intervention in 1906 Dalby\, Queensland: Jessie\, age seven\, was removed from her Aboriginal mother Clara and institutionalised at Rhyndarra in Yeronga. \nFrom there\, Howell tracks what families often inherit: silence\, missing pages\, and a sense that identity was taken—not lost. She uses historical records and reports\, interwoven with family memory\, to reconstruct a life that policy and systems tried to re-label\, and erase. \nValerie Howell’s framing of her grandmother’s story aligns Jessie’s experience with themes that recur “far too often” in this nation’s history—cruelty\, prejudice\, and the long tail of institutional power over Indigenous lives. \n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, February 21st at Wynnum Library\, 2.30 – 4.30 PM\nRSVP to secure your seat\nSee FLYER

SUMMARY:2026 Australia: A Year for Indigenous Peoples Rights a Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Your Special Invite to 2026 Australia: A Year for Indigenous Peoples Rights  Webinar\nThe Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action (FAIRA) warmly invites you to join us in a webinar exploring Australia’s human rights performance. \nFirst Nations (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander) peoples of Australia have experienced a decline in their status and wellbeing as individuals and as Peoples. The absence of representative Indigenous Peoples leadership at the national level has led to a recent upgrowth of unacceptable racist policies and practices throughout political and judicial systems in Australia. \nOn 26 January 2026 Australia is to appear before a working group of the UN Human Rights Council to hear UN Member States consider Australia’s human rights performance during recent years\, and present recommendations for action in the immediate future. These recommendations can be monitored for compliance and we urge closer attention to the efforts of parliaments to meet their international obligations. \nJoin our panel of experts in a discussion about reviewing Australia’s efforts to promote and protect the rights of the Indigenous Peoples. Learn more about the periodic review of Australia’s human rights performance and how to observe the review of Australia. \nSpeakers : \nCommissioner Katie Kiss\, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner \nLes Malezer\, Chairperson FAIRA \nBlake Alan Cansdale\, National Director\, ANTAR \nWhen: AEST 4pm Tuesday\, 20 January 2026 \nFree Zoom RSVP

SUMMARY:Film: Yurlu | Country
DESCRIPTION:What was once a life-sustaining environment for Maitland Parker and his ancestors is now a toxic waste dump. The Wittenoom (Nambigunnha) Gorge Asbestos Mine in Western Australia was abandoned more than 60 years ago\, but left behind millions of tons of deadly asbestos. What was once ‘Yurlu’ (Country) is now what Maitland calls ‘poison country’. Diagnosed with mesothelioma\, he too has been poisoned. In a journey that traverses deep-time\, we tell the stories of this ancient land through the symbiotic connection between community and country. \nIntimate moments with Maitland and his family are contrasted with expansive cinematography of the other major character in the film — the stunning Pilbara landscape.
