DESCRIPTION:Aunty Sandra King OAM is a Magandjin Elder whose first home was Barrambin\, the place known today as Victoria Park. \nHer story runs from when she was a child on Barrambin\, to now when she stands strong for Country as an Elder\, and I wanted you to hear her tell her story in her own voice. \nAunty Sandra is a Magandjin born Elder of Yagara\, Quandamooka\, Bundjalung and South Sea Islander ancestry. Her first home was Barrambin\, the place known today as Victoria Park. As a child in the 1950s she lived in the Victoria Park settlement\, where she sat with Elders and learned her people’s ways. \nThe settlement was demolished in 1960\, but the place never left her\, and she has been a leading voice in protesting the development of the 2032 Olympic stadium at Barrambin\, Victoria Park. SUMMARY:Traditional Indigenous Games at Hillbrook
DESCRIPTION:Just letting you all know we’ve rescheduled our Traditional Indigenous Games\, and will now be hosting them at Hillbrook on Thursday 23rd July\, 2026. We are going with our original plan of having a marquee set up for the Teralba Park Stolen Generations Support Group\, in the hope that you will be able to drop in for the day\, half day\, an hour\, or whatever works for you. We’ll be playing the games of Keentan (Kalkadoon) and Buroinjin (Kabi Kabi) and will have 8 schools from across the district present. \nYou are more than welcome to bring family and/or friends with you to the event. During our discussions throughout the year\, we have been hopeful of having an Elder’s tent where the students can come and say hello\, hear a story or have a yarn. If you’re able to join us\, please let me know so we can provide some catering for you. The opening ceremony will be at 9.00am\, with Refiti Tovi delivering the Welcome to Country\, and some of our students performing our own Hillbrook song\, ‘Mother Earth’. Games will run from 9.30 to 2.00pm\, with presentations of our Fair Play turtle shells (created by Nikki Jones – Quandamooka) and competition trophy. \nHopefully\, we’ll see you soon. DESCRIPTION:CLAIM BACK THE PARK: FOURTH FRIDAYS at FOUR \nDATE CLAIMER\nGIICA may have erected fences around the majority of the northern side of the park\, but these do not mean that we cannot access some parts of the park or that we should stop requesting GIICA to review their current fencing boundaries. \nWe held a series of catch-ups in the park in May and by popular request\, they are back! It’s time that we ‘claim back’ our park! The Pump Track is still open and is well lit after sunset. \nThe fight to protect Victoria Park Barrambin is far from over. Legal action is ongoing and we are absolutely not giving up. \nWhile that fight continues\, we want to come together in the park each month to celebrate this extraordinary place\, connect with each other and remind ourselves exactly what we are fighting for. \nCome for a little while or stay the whole time. DESCRIPTION:Ainslie Thompson is a proud Gooreng Gooreng and Yuggera woman. She has experience teaching middle years in both Queensland and Victoria. Currently\, Ainslie is an inclusion teacher at a school in Inala. She values this work as she is able to walk alongside children and young people and guide them on their learning journeys. In her spare time\, she enjoys many arts and crafts\, one of which includes weaving. \nKate Thompson is also a proud Gooreng Gooreng and Yuggera woman. She is a lecturer in Health and Social Work at the University of Queensland.
