DESCRIPTION:For decades\, as a Gooreng Gooreng man and former head of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland\, Uncle Michael Williams has been a guiding voice in assuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islandercultures are respected\, protected\, and taught truthfully. \n \nHis work has demonstrated a deep commitment to his community and the careful\, deliberate sharing of First Nations knowledges. After a long career in senior roles at universities\, he is actively engagedwith the School of Languages and Culture at the University of Queensland\, providing leadership on Indigenous knowledges. \nHe is a fully initiated man (a Wati)—referred to as being ‘put into lore’ — with intrinsic connections to Warlmanpa\, Yankunytjatjara\, Pitjantjatjara\, Eastern Aranda and Central Aranda peoples. He has undergone the formal\, rigorous rites of passage required to become a custodian of his culture. DESCRIPTION:Uncle William ‘Billy’ Gorham\, a Koa and Cobble Cobble man\, came to Brisbane from Cherbourg as a young man and has since over the decades contributed to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and committees\, consistently speaking up on social justice\, health\, and socio-economic issues affecting First Nations people. \nHe served on the Council of Management of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (ATSICHS) Brisbane from 1996\, was Board Chair from 2007 to 2018\, and was made a Life Member at the organisation’s 50th Anniversary in 2023. \nHe brings deep cultural knowledge\, leadership\, and generosity to the May 17\, 2026 Yarning Circle at St John’s Cathedral Brisbane. \nLemson. DESCRIPTION:Save the Date of Sunday 7 June 2026 to attend an important ‘Truth-Telling’ session with our leading First Nations Guest\, Dr Noritta Morseu-Diop\, from 2.30 PM – 4.30 PM at CARINDALE LIBRARY. \nDr Noritta Morseu-Diop is a First Nations woman originally from Tamwoy Town\, Thursday Island\, in Far North Queensland. She became the first Torres Strait Islander to graduate with a PhD from the University of Queensland. As a highly experienced academic\, social worker and counselling practitioner\, Dr Noritta has been working in and alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and within non Indigenous communities throughout the state of Queensland for well over thirty years. \nHer areas of work include grief and loss counselling\, support and rehabilitation for incarcerated persons\, cross-cultural education\, and advocacy for Indigenous health\, human rights\, and social justice.Morseau-Diop has specialised in understanding the experiences of incarcerated Indigenous people and published her research in a book: Healing in Justice: Giving a Voice to the Silent and Forgotten People. In 2018 she received the Indigenous Community Impact Award. She has also received the Winston Churchill Fellowship. \nDownload the FLYER
